Roger Lehosit, owner of MCM Business Systems, has always said, "I'm not afraid of work." Hard work, especially on behalf of his customers and his community has earned MCM 13 consecutive years on the Minolta Honor Council, three Minolta Top Achiever trips and many community awards including the Gold Star Award from the Educational Alliance of West Virginia, the Charles McCallister Award for Service to Youth, Man of Year Award presented by the Shinnston News and Journal, and named A Friend of Education by the Harrison County Board of Education. MCM Business Systems has become a model of success in the Clarksburg area. Established in 1983 by Roger and his wife, Suzi, MCM, which started as a cash register sales/service company, now comprises an office supply and furniture division, copy center, a computer sales and networking division, and is the local leader in sales of copiers. MCM started as a cash register sales and service company in 1983. Lehosit notes, "I named it after my three children, Michael, Cyndi and Matt, who were 3, 4, and 5 at the time." It was a big risk, however by 1987 MCM had already surpassed it's five-year goal. In 1988, Lehosit walked into a trade show in Florida thinking about a copier dealership, and within one month MCM was a Minolta copier dealer. Within six months of becoming a Minolta Dealer, MCM had earned Minolta's Most Improved Dealer Award, and was followed with a memorable trip to Spain. The next year MCM joined Minolta's Honor Council and has since not left the Council. A Local Guy Used to Providing Service How did MCM do it? And more importantly, how did we do it in a small market like Clarksburg? "I started with my cash register customer base, " says Lehosit. "I'd had five years in the cash register business and I was a local guy who knew everybody and I was used to making service the major part of my business." Lehosit admits he had no other goal but to "go out there and sell copiers." To accomplish that, he started with his retail accounts and placed a number of coin-operated units. Having established his reputation as a customer-focused business, word spread quickly that he was in the copier business. "We sold 100 entry level copiers in our first six months as a copier dealer ," he says. "Service means you form a total partnership with your customer," says Lehosit. "In small communities, your reputation spreads by word-of-mouth." Highlighting MCM's respect and care for customers is the discipline and pride reflected by our service staff. "Our service technicians dress in shirts and ties. They look and act like professionals, so our customers have total confidence," he says. MCM is totally based around service. There are only four sales people, including Lehosit, among the MCM team. We make certain to surround ourselves with professionals and we have learned that people who are not afraid to work, who are really good at what they do, and who are willing to learn; are the kind of folks who work at MCM Business Systems. Running a Business with Personality Employee retention has been consistently high at MCM. The majority of employees have worked here for five or six years, and several have been with the company for 10 or more years. MCM provides full benefits for employees including medical coverage, retirement, vacations and holidays, as well as a family-like office atmosphere. But MCM doesn't stop there, we also throw a lavish holiday season party every year. In the past we have enjoyed bus tours, plays and hockey games. "We even rent limos for special dinner occasions," says Lehosit. MCM has always promoted from within, making established employees, who understand the values and personality of the company, managers. "Part of our continued success is maintaining our company's personality. People who come here to work become part of team MCM and that strengthens the success and commitment of our company. Growing Despite the Odds MCM's success has been built on down-the-street copier sales. We have achieved 30% annual growth during the past five years. MCM has made the move into the digital copier field and excelled. In order to make the transition as smooth as possible, MCM bought a small computer company, and that gave us the expertise we needed and allowed us to offer networking services. The changeover to the digital versus analog line opened up important sales opportunities throughout our field. Having grown to become the leading copier dealer in North Central West Virginia, MCM is also the sole copier provider to West Virginia University (WVU). Giving Back and Supporting the Community MCM's success story doesn't end with sales or service. Our success is directly tied to our support of the community. Our projects are almost too numerous to list, but our major events include: Title Sponsorship of the Greater Clarksburg 10K Run and Wing Cook-off, sponsorship of An Extra Helping of Service, the Medbrook Children's Charity Golf Tournament, the West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival, Partners in Education with Norwood Elementary, Salem Middle, South Harrison Middle, Gore Middle and Lumberport Middle School and $5,000 in annual college scholarships for local high school graduates. |
